TSMC Accelerates 1.4nm Chip Production Timeline to Next Year

Electronic Technology · Semiconductors · yonhap_finance · 2026-09-10

TSMC is fast-tracking its 1.4nm semiconductor production, with pilot runs expected to begin next year as construction at its Taichung facility speeds up.

What Happened

Accelerated Roadmap: Global foundry leader TSMC is set to begin production of its cutting-edge 1.4nm chips ahead of schedule, moving the timeline up by approximately six months. The acceleration is driven by faster-than-expected construction progress at its Taichung facility.

Facility Progress: The first plant (P1) at the company's Fab 25 site has completed its structural framework and is slated for completion by April next year. Meanwhile, construction on the second plant (P2) is also moving quickly, with completion expected by October of next year.

Economic Impact: Once all four plants at the Fab 25 site are fully operational by 2028, the project is projected to generate over 500 billion New Taiwan dollars in annual revenue. Additionally, the expansion is expected to create approximately 4,500 new jobs in the region.

Supply Chain Growth: The move toward 1.4nm production is attracting key semiconductor equipment and material suppliers, including ASML and Tokyo Electron, to the Taichung area. This development is expected to further solidify the region's position as a critical hub in the global semiconductor supply chain.
