Foreign Investors Dump $1.5B in Taiwan Stocks, Targeting Memory Chips While Buying Panels and Shipping

Electronic Technology · Semiconductors · cnyes · 2026-09-03

Taiwan stocks fell over 300 points as foreign investors offloaded $1.5 billion in shares, heavily selling memory chip makers while rotating into panel and shipping stocks.

What Happened

Market Decline: The Taiwan stock market dropped 307 points today, falling below the key 23,000-point threshold amid heavy selling pressure. Foreign investors offloaded 48.1 billion TWD, marking a two-day total sell-off of 139.5 billion TWD.

Memory Sector Sell-off: Foreign capital significantly reduced exposure to the memory chip sector, with heavy selling seen in Nanya Technology, Winbond, PSMC, and Macronix. Electronic components and various ETFs also faced substantial selling pressure throughout the session.

Rotation into Panels and Shipping: Despite the broad sell-off, foreign investors increased positions in panel manufacturers AUO and Innolux, as well as shipping companies including China Airlines, EVA Air, and Yang Ming. Financial stocks also saw selective buying, with notable inflows into Mega Financial and Far Eastern Bank.

Futures Market Divergence: While selling heavily in the spot market, foreign investors covered 3,704 short positions in TAIEX futures, reducing their net short position to 81,500 contracts. This divergence between spot and futures activity suggests a complex hedging strategy amid current market volatility.
