Mirae Asset Securities projects a 1.4 trillion won sell-off in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix as KRX semiconductor index rebalancing forces ETF adjustments.

What Happened

Index Rebalancing Impact: The Korea Exchange is undergoing its regular rebalancing of sector indices, requiring 33 ETFs tracking these indices to adjust their portfolios. This process is designed to prevent excessive concentration in specific stocks by enforcing weight caps.

Semiconductor Sell-off: Mirae Asset Securities estimates that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will face selling pressure totaling 1.4 trillion won. Because both stocks currently exceed the 20% weight cap within the KRX Semiconductor Index, ETFs must reduce their holdings to comply with the new index rules.

Other Affected Stocks: Beyond the semiconductor sector, Samsung SDI is also expected to see approximately 63.8 billion won in selling pressure due to weight limit adjustments within the KRX Secondary Battery TOP10 Index. Investors are monitoring these stocks closely ahead of the implementation date.

Market Volatility Warning: The index changes are set to take effect on the 11th, with significant rebalancing trades expected near the market close on the 10th. Analysts warn that stocks with high estimated trade volumes relative to their average daily turnover may experience increased volatility as the rebalancing concludes.
