Taiwan's stock market surged 6.9% in August, outperforming all other Asian markets, as MSCI rebalancing provided a late-session boost to hold the 46,000-point mark.
What Happened
August Market Performance: Taiwan's stock market concluded August as the top performer in Asia, recording a monthly gain of 3,008 points or 6.9%. Despite a sharp intraday decline triggered by hawkish comments from Fed Chair Walsh and geopolitical tensions, the index managed to maintain its upward momentum for the month.
MSCI Rebalancing Impact: The index was significantly bolstered during the final trading session by massive volume from the MSCI quarterly rebalancing, which saw 306.4 billion TWD in trades. This surge helped the weighted index recover from an 881-point drop to close at 46,128, with total daily volume reaching 1.28 trillion TWD.
Outlook and Strategy: Analysts suggest that the market is likely to enter a period of range-bound consolidation as it approaches previous resistance levels and awaits the upcoming FOMC meeting in mid-September. Investors are advised to maintain a cash position of 40% to 50% and focus on sectors such as semiconductors, new Apple product launches, and companies with strong August revenue growth.
High-Price Stock Dynamics: The composition of the 'thousand-dollar' stock club saw shifts, with Unimicron falling out of the group while Genius Electronic Optical joined following a limit-up performance. While foreign investors reduced their net short positions in index futures, state-backed banks intervened with 7.84 billion TWD in buying to stabilize the market.
