The Federation of Industries calls for the reactivation of nuclear plants and diversified energy strategies to secure stable power for Taiwan's AI sector.
What Happened
Energy Policy Shift: The Federation of Industries (CNFI) has expressed strong support for the government's evaluation of restarting the No. 2 and No. 3 nuclear power plants. Industry leaders argue that a diversified energy mix is essential to maintain stable power supplies for the rapidly expanding AI sector.
Strengthening Energy Resilience: CNFI Vice Chairman Hou Chieh-teng emphasized that Taiwan's heavy reliance on energy imports poses significant risks due to geopolitical instability. The group advocates for a pragmatic adjustment of the power structure, including the integration of nuclear energy and the development of decentralized microgrids to protect key industrial clusters.
Accelerating Nuclear Reviews: Industry representatives warned that current evaluation timelines for nuclear reactivation are too slow to meet immediate industrial needs. They suggest accelerating the review process and exploring Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to provide flexible, reliable baseload power for science parks.
Decarbonization and Strategic Reserves: The CNFI urged the government to delay strict carbon cap-and-trade policies to maintain international competitiveness while accelerating the implementation of a domestic CBAM. Furthermore, they proposed the creation of a national strategic reserve for critical materials, including natural gas and rare earth minerals, to mitigate supply chain risks.
