Taiwan's stock market fell below the quarterly moving average and the 45,000-point mark today, with trading volume hitting a new low since April.

What Happened

Market Performance: The Taiwan Stock Exchange index opened higher but faced downward pressure throughout the day, closing down 1.02% at 44,762 points. The index failed to hold the quarterly moving average and the 45,000-point threshold, while trading volume dropped significantly to 651.9 billion NTD, the lowest level since April 8th.

Institutional Activity: Institutional investors were net sellers, with a combined net sell of 163.77 billion NTD. Foreign investors reversed their previous buying trend to net sell 157.51 billion NTD, while proprietary traders sold 43.32 billion NTD; foreign short positions in futures also increased slightly to 82,500 contracts.

Stock Movements: Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing (6770-TW) emerged as the top target for foreign buying, with 38,000 shares purchased, ending a five-day selling streak. Conversely, the Formosa Plastics Group stocks faced heavy selling pressure from foreign institutional investors.

Market Outlook: Beyond the semiconductor sector, foreign investors showed interest in the shipping industry, with three container shipping stocks appearing in the top 10 buy list. The combination of shrinking volume and foreign institutional outflows suggests that the market is currently facing a period of consolidation and heightened caution.
