Satellite Launch Timeline: SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that the company will launch its first AI-powered satellite in the fourth quarter of next year. The project utilizes Nvidia's 'Vera Rubin NVL72 system,' which has been specifically optimized for space deployment.
Technical Capabilities: Musk highlighted that the new satellite design is significantly more compact, lightweight, and cost-effective than traditional data center racks. Each unit is designed to provide up to 150kW of computing power, powered entirely by solar energy in orbit.
Scalability and Cost Concerns: While Musk aims to reach 1GW of orbital computing capacity by late 2027 with exponential growth thereafter, analysts remain skeptical. Research firms like Wood Mackenzie estimate that the cost of building space-based data centers could be triple that of terrestrial facilities.
Strategic Outlook: To mitigate costs, SpaceX is leveraging its Starship rocket to reduce launch expenses significantly. The company has already filed for FCC approval to deploy up to one million satellites dedicated to these orbital data center operations.
