The Dutch Central Bank has moved 86 tons of gold from the U.S. and Canada to London to enhance liquidity and bolster resilience against geopolitical risks.
What Happened
Gold Relocation Strategy: The Dutch Central Bank (DNB) has successfully transferred 86 tons of its gold reserves from New York and Ottawa to London. This move is primarily driven by the need to navigate increasing geopolitical uncertainties and strengthen national asset security.
Enhanced Liquidity: Officials noted that storing gold in London offers superior accessibility and liquidity compared to North American locations. While the bank does not anticipate needing to sell its reserves, it emphasizes the importance of maintaining readiness and operational flexibility.
Portfolio Rebalancing: Following the transfer, London's share of the DNB's total gold holdings increased significantly from 18.1% to 32.1%. Meanwhile, the proportions held in New York and Ottawa were reduced to 18.5% each, with domestic holdings remaining stable at 30.8%.
Risk Management: To mitigate the risks associated with transporting large quantities of physical gold, the DNB utilized a combination of direct shipments and asset swaps. As of the end of last year, the Netherlands held 612.4 tons of gold, valued at approximately 72.2 billion euros.
