Retail Investor Sentiment Cools as Taiwan Stock Brokerage Deposits Hit 4-Month Low
Finance · Major Banks · cnyes · 2026-08-24
Taiwan's central bank reported a significant drop in brokerage deposits for July, signaling a retreat in retail investor participation amid market volatility.
What Happened
Retail Sentiment Shift: The Central Bank of Taiwan reported a sharp decline in brokerage deposits for July, which fell by NT$241.3 billion to NT$4.18 trillion. This drop, the largest since December, reflects a significant cooling in retail investor activity following a record-breaking monthly decline in the local stock market.
Market Participation Trends: Data indicates that retail investors' share of total trading volume dropped to 48.9% in July, while foreign investors increased their activity to 39.1%. Consequently, foreign-held New Taiwan Dollar deposits reached their highest level since May 2021, highlighting a shift in capital positioning.
Macroeconomic Indicators: Foreign currency deposits hit a record high of NT$9.59 trillion, driven by strong export performance and high demand for foreign exchange among local businesses. Meanwhile, the annual growth rates for M1B and M2 both declined, suggesting that net foreign capital outflows have impacted overall liquidity.
Lending and Investment: Total lending and investment by monetary institutions saw an annual growth rate of 9.07%, supported by increased credit demand from government-owned enterprises. When adjusted to include life insurance company data, the overall financial institution lending growth rate reached 7.40%, indicating continued credit support for the economy.
