Samsung Securities has been approved as the eighth issuer of promissory notes in South Korea, with plans to launch its first product this month.

What Happened

License Approval: Samsung Securities has officially received approval from the Financial Services Commission to enter the short-term financing business. This makes the firm the eighth comprehensive financial investment business operator authorized to issue promissory notes in Korea.

Business Mechanics: Promissory notes are short-term debt instruments with maturities of one year or less, issued by securities firms with equity capital exceeding 4 trillion won. Samsung Securities can issue up to 200% of its equity capital, with a mandate to allocate 25% of the proceeds to venture capital investments.

Regulatory Context: The firm had been seeking this license since being designated as a comprehensive financial investment business in 2017. Previous regulatory hurdles related to internal compliance issues were resolved, clearing the path for the final approval.

Strategic Outlook: The company aims to provide diverse investment options for its clients while contributing to the supply of venture capital for domestic industries. Management confirmed that preparations are underway to launch the inaugural product within the current month.
