Regulators Warn Investors Over Costs of Short-Term Target-Date Funds

Finance · Investment Managers · yonhap_finance · 2026-09-09

Financial regulators are warning investors about the hidden costs of target-date funds as shorter holding periods make fee structures less efficient.

What Happened

Surge in Popularity: Target-date funds have seen a significant influx of capital, with 3.2 trillion won in new assets during the first half of the year. However, as the time taken to reach target returns has shortened to an average of just 57 days, investors are facing increased cost burdens.

Fee Structure Risks: A large majority of investors are choosing A-class funds, which feature upfront sales commissions designed for long-term holding. When these funds are redeemed early, the upfront costs significantly erode net returns, making them inefficient for short-term strategies.

Return Uncertainty: The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has warned that target returns are not guaranteed. Market volatility can lead to delays in reaching targets or result in final returns that fall well below the initial objectives, posing risks to unsuspecting investors.

Regulatory Action: To enhance investor protection, the FSS is introducing new standardized risk disclosure guidelines for funds starting on the 30th. Investors are advised to carefully evaluate their expected investment horizon and the fee structures of their chosen products before committing capital.
