KIS and Moody's: Global Private Credit Risks Contained, Domestic Exposure Hits 56 Trillion KRW

Finance · Investment Managers · yonhap_finance · 2026-08-27

Korea Investors Service and Moody's assess that while global private credit faces volatility, the risk to the Korean financial system remains limited.

What Happened

Private Credit Risk Assessment: Korea Investors Service (KIS) and Moody's stated that despite recent red flags in the global private credit market, such as redemption halts, the likelihood of a systemic financial crisis remains low. However, they emphasized that structural vulnerabilities and transparency issues require ongoing vigilance.

Domestic Exposure Analysis: As of late February, Korean financial institutions and pension funds held approximately 55.9 trillion KRW in overseas private credit investments. Insurance companies account for 67.4% of this exposure, though the ratio relative to total assets remains a manageable 1.5%.

AI Concentration Concerns: A significant risk factor identified is the concentration of private credit in AI-related assets, which accounted for 34% of new transactions last year. Analysts warned that circular financing structures between big tech and semiconductor firms could potentially transmit individual corporate distress to the broader financial sector.

Future Monitoring: With a massive wave of loan maturities scheduled between 2027 and 2029, refinancing risk has become a primary concern. Experts stressed the importance of monitoring default rates, delinquency trends, and maturity extensions to ensure the market can absorb the upcoming liquidity needs.
