Hyundai Motor August Sales Dip Below 300,000 Units Amid Labor Strikes

Consumer Durables · Motor Vehicles · yonhap_finance · 2026-09-01

Hyundai Motor's global sales fell 14% in August to 288,000 units, marking the first time in over four years that monthly sales dropped below 300,000.

What Happened

Sales Slump: Hyundai Motor reported global sales of 288,574 units in August, a 14.2% decline compared to the same period last year. This marks the first time in 4 years and 7 months that the company's monthly sales have fallen below the 300,000-unit threshold.

Primary Causes: The decline is primarily attributed to production disruptions caused by labor union strikes. Domestic sales saw a sharp 41.1% drop year-on-year, while overseas sales also contracted by 8.5%, contributing to the overall weak performance.

Model Performance: While models like the Grandeur, Sonata, Santa Fe, and Palisade continued to lead domestic sales, they were insufficient to offset the significant production shortfall. The Genesis brand also saw sales activity across its G80 and GV70 lineups during the month.

Future Outlook: Hyundai management cited the combination of labor strikes and waiting demand for new models as the key factors behind the temporary slump. The company plans to focus on expanding its market share by leveraging its latest vehicle releases, including the new Grandeur and Avante.
