Taiwan stocks saw a historic sell-off by foreign investors yesterday, yet domestic institutional support and record ETF inflows helped cushion the 1,655-point decline.
What Happened
Record Foreign Sell-off: Foreign investors executed a historic sell-off of NT$302.5 billion in Taiwan stocks yesterday, marking their seventh consecutive day of net selling. Additionally, foreign net short positions in TAIEX futures surged to a record high of 97,582 contracts, signaling significant bearish sentiment from international players.
Domestic Institutional Support: To counter the massive foreign outflow, state-run financial institutions intervened with a record-breaking NT$68.05 billion in buying. Combined with record net inflows of NT$103.04 billion into Taiwan equity ETFs and consistent support from local investment trusts, the domestic market successfully mitigated a sharper decline.
Market Performance and Volume: The TAIEX fell by 1,655 points to close at 46,969, with trading volume spiking to NT$1.43 trillion. While the index slipped below its monthly moving average, the high volume suggests a rapid capitulation phase as the market seeks a bottom.
Analyst Outlook: Market analysts remain optimistic about the long-term prospects for the AI sector and TSMC. Many experts suggest that the recent correction provides an attractive entry point for investors, encouraging those with a higher risk appetite to consider accumulating positions during this volatility.
