Taiwan Tightens EV Charger Regulations: Mandatory Inspections Expanded to 750kW by 2028

Electronic Technology · Electronic Equipment/Instruments · cnyes · 2026-09-09

Taiwan's Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection has mandated safety and metrology testing for EV chargers, starting with home units and scaling up to 750kW by 2028.

What Happened

Mandatory Inspection Framework: The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) has established a comprehensive regulatory framework for EV charging infrastructure. As of July 2024, all home-use EV chargers under 30kW are subject to mandatory safety and compliance inspections before market entry.

Phased Regulatory Expansion: The government plans to broaden the scope of these mandatory inspections significantly by January 1, 2028. This expansion will cover high-capacity chargers ranging from 30kW up to 750kW, ensuring that all commercial and public charging equipment meets national standards.

Ensuring Metrological Accuracy: To protect consumer interests, the BSMI has implemented mandatory verification for all chargers that bill by the kilowatt-hour. Over 14,000 charging connectors have already been verified, with ongoing market surveillance to ensure billing accuracy and fair trade practices.

Future-Proofing Infrastructure: Looking ahead, the BSMI is preparing for the rise of megawatt-level charging for electric buses and trucks. By 2030, the bureau aims to provide localized testing services for advanced bidirectional charging technologies to support industry growth and safety.
