Xpeng stock dropped over 9% in Hong Kong after the EV maker provided disappointing third-quarter delivery guidance, despite a major funding win for its robotics unit.
What Happened
Financial Performance and Delivery Outlook: Xpeng reported a second-quarter net loss of 1.34 billion yuan, widening from the previous year, while revenue saw a modest 8% increase to 19.74 billion yuan. The company's forecast for third-quarter deliveries, projected between 115,000 and 121,000 units, disappointed investors and triggered a sharp decline in share price.
Robotics Unit Funding Success: The company's robotics division successfully raised over $900 million in an initial funding round, achieving a post-transaction valuation exceeding $6.3 billion. Backed by major investors like IDG Capital, Tencent, and Alibaba, the unit aims to leverage Xpeng's existing AI and chip expertise to advance humanoid robot production.
Market Analyst Perspectives: Citi analysts lowered their price targets for Xpeng, citing supply chain bottlenecks that hindered the production ramp-up of the MONA L03 model. While the bank remains optimistic about the long-term potential of the robotics business, it noted that the EV segment's implied valuation has become increasingly tied to these emerging technology ventures.
Strategic Growth and Challenges: Despite ambitions to eventually sell more robots than vehicles, Xpeng continues to face significant headwinds in the competitive Chinese electric car market. The company is balancing its core automotive business with aggressive investments in humanoid robotics and flying vehicle technologies to secure future growth.
