TAPI Pipeline Nears Completion in Afghanistan, Paving Way for Turkmen Gas Exports

Energy Minerals · Oil & Gas Production · yonhap_finance · 2026-08-31

The Afghan section of the TAPI pipeline is set to finish within two months, marking a key step for Turkmenistan to diversify its gas export markets.

What Happened

Progress on TAPI Pipeline: The TAPI pipeline, a 1,800km project connecting Turkmenistan to India via Afghanistan and Pakistan, is making significant headway. Authorities in Afghanistan's Herat province expect the Afghan segment of the pipeline to be completed within the next two months.

Project Background: Initiated by an intergovernmental agreement in 2010, the project faced numerous delays due to regional instability and conflict. Construction resumed in September 2024, with 116km of pipeline already laid in the Afghan territory.

Remaining Hurdles: Despite the construction progress, actual gas exports remain pending. Both nations have signed a memorandum of understanding, but critical details such as pricing, volume, and start dates for supply have yet to be finalized.

Strategic Importance: Turkmenistan currently relies on China for over 75% of its gas exports and is aggressively seeking to diversify its customer base. Successfully delivering gas to Afghanistan would serve as a vital proof-of-concept to attract further international investment into the TAPI project.
