South Korean Financial Authorities Launch Industry-Specific AML Task Forces to Combat Money Laundering

Finance · Financial Conglomerates · yonhap_finance · 2026-08-27

The Korea Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) is collaborating with 16 financial institutions to launch AML task forces to counter increasingly sophisticated money laundering techniques.

What Happened

AML Cooperation Council Meeting: The Financial Services Commission and the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) convened with 16 financial associations to discuss countermeasures against evolving money laundering risks. The meeting focused on strengthening the financial sector's response capabilities based on the results of the national risk assessment conducted late last year.

Four-Pillar Response Strategy: The FIU outlined a strategic framework covering risk assessment, governance establishment, system advancement, and the strengthening of association roles. Financial institutions are committed to conducting periodic self-assessments and prioritizing resources, including IT infrastructure and personnel, to address identified vulnerabilities effectively.

Technological Integration and Talent Development: The sector plans to adopt AI-driven detection methods and improve data quality management to bridge the digital divide between different financial industries. Efforts are also underway to encourage the appointment of dedicated AML departments and to foster specialized talent capable of utilizing advanced data analytics.

Industry-Specific Task Forces: Starting in the second half of this year, industry associations will operate 'AML Advancement Task Forces' to execute six key initiatives, including the development of standardized guidelines and joint suspicious transaction detection rules. Regulators emphasized that this shift is necessary to move beyond formal compliance toward a more substantive and effective control paradigm.
