HMM Secures 4.7 Trillion Won Long-Term Shipping Deal with Brazil's Vale

Transportation · Marine Shipping · yonhap_finance · 2026-09-08

HMM has signed a massive 4.7 trillion won long-term shipping contract with Brazilian mining giant Vale, spanning 25 years starting in 2030.

What Happened

Major Long-Term Contract: HMM has finalized a long-term shipping agreement with Vale, Brazil's largest mining company, valued at approximately 4.7 trillion won. The contract, set to commence in 2030, will span 25 years per vessel, providing the company with a stable and long-term revenue stream.

Eco-Friendly Fleet Expansion: To fulfill the contract, HMM has ordered eight 210,000-ton Newcastlemax bulk carriers equipped with world-first triple-fuel engines capable of running on methanol, ethanol, and heavy fuel oil. These vessels are designed to be 'LNG/Ammonia ready' and feature wind-assisted propulsion systems to maximize fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Bulk Business Transformation: Since CEO Choi Won-hyuk took office, HMM has been shifting its strategy from short-term charters to long-term contracts with high-quality, large-scale shippers. This strategic pivot has significantly improved the company's financial performance, with the bulk division reporting 240 billion won in operating profit in the first half of this year alone.

Diversified Business Portfolio: HMM is actively expanding its fleet beyond traditional dry bulk and tankers to include gas carriers, car carriers, and multi-purpose vessels. By diversifying its portfolio and increasing its fleet size, the company aims to solidify its profit base and focus on high-margin, future-oriented growth.
