Electronic Technology · Semiconductors · economic_daily · 2026-08-24
Taiwan's stock market experienced volatility in early trading, with UMC standing out as a bright spot while other major tech heavyweights faced downward pressure.
What Happened
Market Performance: The Taiwan Stock Exchange saw a volatile start to the session, with the weighted index fluctuating around the flat line. The index eventually dipped 56.9 points to 45,167.39, accompanied by a trading volume of NT$91.38 billion.
Semiconductor Strength: Foundry giant UMC emerged as a key driver, posting gains that bolstered sentiment across the semiconductor sector. Peers such as Vanguard International Semiconductor and PSMC also tracked higher, providing a buffer against broader market weakness.
Heavyweight Drag: Major tech bellwethers faced selling pressure, with TSMC falling NT$15 to NT$2,395 and Delta Electronics dropping NT$40 to a low of NT$1,710. Meanwhile, Foxconn remained relatively flat, hovering near its opening price of NT$245.5.
Outlook: The market remains in a consolidation phase as investors weigh the strength of semiconductor stocks against the weakness in major index components. Market participants are closely monitoring volume trends to gauge the potential for a sustained recovery.
