Taiwan Stocks Surge to Two-Month High as Foreign Investors Pivot to Active ETFs

Electronic Technology · Semiconductors · economic_daily · 2026-09-01

Taiwan stocks jumped over 820 points to a two-month high, fueled by MediaTek's rally following a $3.5 billion investment from NVIDIA and strong foreign buying.

What Happened

Market Rally: The Taiwan stock market staged a powerful rally today, climbing 820.25 points to close at 46,948.72, marking a new two-month high. Trading volume surged to NT$1.08 trillion, reflecting robust investor sentiment that outperformed regional peers in Japan and South Korea.

MediaTek Catalyst: MediaTek shares hit the daily limit of 4,315 NTD after NVIDIA announced a $3.5 billion investment via convertible bonds. This strategic partnership served as the primary engine for the broader market's breakout, significantly boosting investor confidence.

Institutional Buying: All three major institutional groups were net buyers, totaling NT$56.14 billion in inflows. Foreign investors accounted for NT$26.71 billion of this, with a clear preference for active ETFs such as the Uni-President series, signaling a shift toward managed investment vehicles.

Foreign Selling Activity: Despite the overall bullish sentiment, foreign investors offloaded significant positions in Powerchip Semiconductor (PSMC), totaling over 78,000 shares. Other notable sell-offs included Winbond, Nanya Technology, UMC, AUO, and Yang Ming Marine Transport, indicating a selective rotation out of specific semiconductor and shipping names.
