Taiwan's stock market fell sharply during intraday trading, dropping over 900 points and breaching the 46,000-point mark as rising oil prices and global market jitters took their toll.

What Happened

Market Sell-off: Escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran have pushed oil prices to a five-month high, triggering a broad sell-off in U.S. markets that spilled over into Taiwan. The TAIEX index plummeted over 900 points during the session, hitting a low of 45,964 and falling below both the 46,000-point psychological level and the monthly moving average.

Heavyweight Drag: Major tech stocks led the decline, with TSMC falling to a low of 2,405 NTD, while MediaTek, Delta Electronics, and Foxconn all saw significant losses. By mid-morning, the index was down 862 points, or 1.8%, with trading volume reaching 452.5 billion NTD.

Panel and Foundry Weakness: Panel makers AUO and Innolux faced heavy selling pressure, with AUO shares sliding 7% amid high trading volume. Semiconductor foundries including UMC and PSMC also struggled, with both recording declines exceeding 4% as investors retreated from riskier assets.

Energy and Industrial Impact: The surge in oil prices impacted the petrochemical sector, with Formosa Plastics Group stocks showing weakness. While Formosa Petrochemical fluctuated, other subsidiaries like Formosa Plastics, Formosa Chemicals & Fibre, and Nan Ya Plastics saw declines ranging from 1% to 4% as market sentiment remained cautious.
