Taiwan's stock market opened sharply lower, with the index dropping over 700 points early in the session as major tech stocks like TSMC faced significant selling pressure.
What Happened
Market Sell-Off: The Taiwan stock market experienced a sharp decline at the opening, with the index falling more than 700 points to a low of 44,152. Although the market later recovered slightly to hover around 44,400 points, the overall sentiment remained bearish throughout the morning session.
Tech Sector Weakness: Heavyweight stocks led the decline, with TSMC dropping 30 TWD to 2,300 TWD, representing a 1.29% decrease. Other major tech players including Hon Hai, MediaTek, and Delta Electronics also saw significant losses, with MediaTek falling by 2.39%.
Sector Divergence: The electronics sector index fell by 1.2%, acting as the primary drag on the broader market. Conversely, the financial sector showed resilience, posting a modest gain of 0.11% as investors sought relative stability amidst the broader market volatility.
Small-Cap Vulnerability: The OTC index, which tracks small and medium-sized enterprises, fell by more than 2%, indicating a lack of confidence in smaller stocks. This broad-based weakness suggests that investors are currently adopting a risk-off approach across various market segments.
