Major Taiwanese brokerages, including KGI Securities and President Securities, are raising over NT$38 billion to bolster working capital as market activity surges.
What Happened
Brokerage Fundraising: Driven by the robust performance of the Taiwan stock market, major brokerages like KGI Securities and President Securities have initiated significant syndicated loan agreements. KGI Securities has authorized a loan of up to NT$21.3 billion, while President Securities has finalized a NT$17.1 billion deal to strengthen their operational liquidity.
Surging Market Demand: Increased market activity has led to a sharp rise in margin trading, stock pledging, and securities lending. By the end of May, total financing across the industry exceeded NT$1.2 trillion, with the ratio to net worth climbing rapidly, forcing firms to expand their capital bases to meet client demand.
Capital Strengthening: Beyond syndicated loans, firms are utilizing bond issuances and capital injections to bolster their balance sheets. KGI Securities alone is expected to increase its capital by up to NT$54.1 billion this year through a combination of debt and loans, while KGI Life is also issuing subordinated bonds to enhance its capital adequacy.
Regulatory Outlook: While the industry association is lobbying for a relaxation of financing ratios, brokerages are proactively securing funds to ensure operational stability. This trend underscores a bullish sentiment among major financial institutions regarding the long-term outlook for the local equity market.
