Foreign investors offloaded a record NT$149.9 billion in Taiwan stocks on Monday, with ETFs like the Yuanta Taiwan 50 becoming primary targets amid extreme market volatility.

What Happened

Record Foreign Sell-off: Taiwan's stock market experienced extreme volatility on Monday, with foreign investors dumping NT$149.9 billion in shares, the fifth-largest single-day sell-off in history. This brings the total foreign withdrawal over the past five trading sessions to over NT$512 billion.

ETF Liquidation: ETFs dominated the list of top stocks sold by foreign investors, with the Yuanta Taiwan 50 (0050) seeing over 77,000 shares offloaded. Despite the heavy selling, the ETF remained highly liquid, recording the third-highest trading volume in the market, highlighting its role as a key battleground for institutional capital.

Market Volatility: The TAIEX index swung nearly 1,900 points throughout the session, initially rising over 400 points before plunging and eventually closing down 358.63 points at 42,948.91. The index briefly dipped below the 42,000-point mark before late-session buying in heavyweights like TSMC helped trim losses.

Institutional Divergence: While foreign and proprietary traders were net sellers, domestic investment trusts continued their buying streak, marking their 17th consecutive day of net purchases with NT$276.31 billion. This divergence between domestic and foreign institutional sentiment underscores the ongoing uncertainty in the local market.
