An industry alliance led by ITRI, Chimei, and FamilyMart is converting plastic waste into circular feedstock to support the petrochemical industry's decarbonization.

What Happened

Alliance Formation: The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has partnered with Chimei Corporation, FamilyMart, and other supply chain members to form a demonstration alliance for plastic waste recycling. The initiative aims to convert plastic packaging waste into circular feedstock for the petrochemical industry.

Recycling Process: The alliance utilizes plastic waste collected from FamilyMart stores and China Airlines flights. ITRI processes this waste into pyrolysis oil, which is then upgraded into circular light oil, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional incineration.

Technical Integration: Through a mass-balance approach, the circular oil is integrated into the petrochemical production chain. Chimei leverages its expertise in material development to transform this feedstock into high-quality plastic products, completing the circular supply chain.

Industry Impact: This project addresses resource waste and carbon emissions while helping Taiwan's petrochemical sector meet global sustainability goals. By fostering cross-industry collaboration, the alliance sets a new standard for low-carbon material applications.
