The Ministry of Economic Affairs is accelerating its energy transition, prioritizing natural gas and renewables to support AI growth while enhancing grid resilience.
What Happened
Energy Transition Progress: The Ministry of Economic Affairs reported that low-carbon power, including natural gas, has increased to 47.7% of the total energy mix, significantly reducing the reliance on coal and oil while lowering carbon emission coefficients by 12%.
Renewables and Nuclear Stance: The government is scaling up rooftop solar and distributed power generation, while maintaining a cautious approach to nuclear energy, strictly adhering to safety, waste management, and public consensus requirements.
Addressing AI Power Needs: To accommodate the rapid growth of AI-driven electricity demand, the government has updated its power forecasts and mandated that large energy consumers install self-generation or storage facilities to alleviate grid pressure.
Grid Resilience and Pricing: Regarding proposals for regional electricity pricing, the Ministry noted a lack of successful international models and stated that current efforts will focus on infrastructure investment and supply-demand balancing to ensure long-term grid stability.
