Taiwanese stocks remain resilient as foreign investors aggressively accumulate panel manufacturers, while August exports surged to a record $82.4 billion on AI demand.
What Happened
Foreign Investment Trends: The Taiwan stock market continues to trade near the 47,000-point level, with foreign investors net buying 120 billion TWD over the past three sessions. Panel makers AUO and Innolux have been primary targets, reflecting optimism for year-end inventory restocking. Investors are also diversifying into active ETFs, signaling a shift in institutional strategy.
Record Export Growth: Driven by explosive demand for AI and high-performance computing, Taiwan's August exports reached an all-time high of 82.4 billion USD, marking a 41% year-on-year increase. This represents the 34th consecutive month of export growth, with trade surpluses also hitting record levels, reinforcing the strength of the local tech sector.
Tech Sector Performance: PCB manufacturers Tripod and Wistron NeWeb reported record-breaking August revenues, with both companies eyeing the 100 billion TWD annual revenue milestone by 2026. Wistron also posted strong growth, with its August revenue doubling year-on-year, and announced a 209 million USD investment to expand server capacity in the U.S. and Vietnam.
Credit Outlook: S&P Global Ratings (Taiwan) highlights that while the tech sector benefits from robust AI infrastructure spending and strong pricing power, traditional commodity industries like steel and petrochemicals face headwinds. These sectors are struggling with overcapacity in China and geopolitical risks, necessitating a strategic pivot toward specialty chemicals to maintain profitability.
