The UK has officially included Taiwan's carbon fee system in its CBAM qualified list, allowing Taiwanese exporters to claim carbon price credits starting in 2027.
What Happened
UK CBAM Recognition: The UK government has officially added Taiwan's carbon fee system to its list of Qualified Carbon Pricing Mechanisms (QCPS) under the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Taiwan now joins a select group of only 16 global jurisdictions whose carbon pricing frameworks meet the UK's rigorous international standards.
Carbon Price Credits: Starting in 2027, the UK will implement its CBAM to ensure imported goods face carbon costs equivalent to those produced domestically. By being on the qualified list, Taiwanese exporters can allow their UK importers to apply for carbon price credits, thereby mitigating the risk of double taxation and maintaining trade competitiveness.
Regulatory Alignment: Taiwan's inclusion follows extensive coordination between the Ministry of Environment and UK authorities to demonstrate that the local fee system is government-managed and transparent. The recognition confirms that Taiwan’s carbon pricing structure meets the specific criteria required for international equivalence under the UK's regulatory framework.
Strategic Preparation: The Ministry of Environment emphasizes that while this is a significant milestone, credits will be calculated based on the 'effective carbon price' of specific products rather than a blanket exemption. Businesses are urged to accelerate their carbon emission accounting and data management to ensure compliance and maximize potential savings before the first reporting deadline in May 2028.
