President Lai Ching-te Pledges to Establish Taiwan as an Asian Asset Management Hub

Finance · Investment Managers · cnyes · 2026-09-04

President Lai Ching-te announced plans to accelerate the development of an Asian asset management hub, aiming to boost Taiwan's global financial competitiveness through regulatory reforms and new legislation.

What Happened

Policy Vision: President Lai Ching-te has reaffirmed the government's commitment to establishing Taiwan as a premier Asian asset management hub. By streamlining regulations and fostering a more open financial environment, the administration aims to bridge local industrial strengths with international capital markets.

Financial Growth: Driven by robust economic performance, Taiwan's banking, securities, and insurance sectors have achieved record-breaking profits. Total assets under management have reached NT$46 trillion as of June, marking a significant increase of NT$14 trillion since the initiative's inception.

Strategic Roadmap: The government is focusing on deepening asset management capabilities and expanding cross-border financial services to create a virtuous cycle of innovation and investment. The Financial Supervisory Commission is currently drafting a dedicated law to provide a stable, long-term legal framework for these activities while ensuring investor protection.

Implementation Progress: Following the successful initial phase of the initiative, the government is now transitioning to a broader implementation strategy. Lessons learned from the Kaohsiung asset management zone will be used to standardize cross-border services and family office operations, which will eventually be scaled up nationwide.
