Economic Minister Kung Ming-hsin clarified that the $20 billion US investment is part of an existing plan, emphasizing the necessity of global semiconductor expansion.

What Happened

Investment Clarification: Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin clarified that the $20 billion investment by Taiwanese firms in the US is part of a pre-existing framework rather than an additional commitment. He emphasized that expanding US production capacity is essential for Taiwanese firms to meet the surging global demand for AI and semiconductors.

Strategic Expansion: Taiwan maintains a core role in the global semiconductor and AI server supply chain. To support smaller suppliers, the Ministry is working with US local governments to establish technology clusters, aiming to lower the barriers for Taiwanese firms to enter the US market.

Regulatory Compliance: Regarding the origin labeling controversy involving Unimicron, Minister Kung stated that the case is under judicial investigation. The government is cooperating with authorities to clarify the facts and ensures that all companies adhere to international trade regulations and export controls.

Policy Support: The government has established inter-ministerial mechanisms to assist companies with export compliance. Furthermore, through existing MOUs with the US, the government is working to secure duty-free import quotas for Taiwanese investors to mitigate the impact of potential new tariffs.
