Foreign Investors Pivot to Net Selling After Record August Buying Spree

Finance · Major Banks · cnyes · 2026-08-31

Foreign investors turned net sellers today, offloading ETFs and tech stocks while rotating into financial sector holdings following a massive August buying streak.

What Happened

Market Flow: Driven by MSCI quarterly rebalancing, foreign investors turned net sellers today, offloading NT$14.39 billion in shares. Despite this shift, foreign investors remain net buyers for the month of August, with a cumulative net purchase of NT$366.82 billion.

Selling Activity: Foreign selling was concentrated in ETFs, with significant reductions in Yuanta Taiwan 50 Bull 2X and Yuanta Taiwan 50. Key tech stocks, including KYEC, Yageo, UMC, and Innolux, also faced heavy selling pressure, each seeing over 10,000 shares offloaded.

Strategic Rotation: Amid the broader market pullback, foreign capital rotated into the financial sector, which accounted for six of the top ten stocks bought today. Notable additions included Taishin Financial, Taiwan Business Bank, and KGI Financial, alongside buying interest in PSMC and AUO.

Institutional Moves: Domestic investment trusts focused their buying on UMC, DaChan Great Wall, and Chang Chun, while also adding to positions in CTBC Financial and KYEC. Conversely, they reduced holdings in Yageo, Kinsus, and Taiwan Business Bank, while trimming exposure to major weights like TSMC.
