Microsoft is consolidating its business segments and will begin disclosing quarterly Azure revenue to provide investors with greater transparency into its cloud performance.

What Happened

Strategic Reporting Shift: Microsoft is moving from three operating segments to two, titled Agents and Infra and Devices and Consumer, to better reflect its current business focus. This restructuring includes the first-ever quarterly revenue disclosure for the Azure cloud platform, aligning the company with competitors like Amazon and Alphabet.

Azure Performance Metrics: Under the new reporting framework, Azure revenue reached $29.42 billion in the June quarter, representing a 42% growth rate and accounting for roughly one-third of total corporate revenue. The company is refining the Azure definition to focus on consumption-based infrastructure, specifically excluding secondary services like GitHub and specialized healthcare cloud tools.

AI Integration and Momentum: The reorganization highlights the company's aggressive pivot toward artificial intelligence, with Azure serving as the primary engine for AI model deployment. Microsoft reported significant adoption of its 365 Copilot, which now boasts over 30 million paid commercial seats as the company blurs the lines between traditional software and AI-driven services.

Investor Transparency and Guidance: To assist with the transition, Microsoft is providing two years of recast financial data and updated guidance for the new segments. While the company will no longer report costs and margins for the previous structure, these changes aim to offer a clearer view of the firm's core cloud and AI-driven revenue streams.
