Retirement Savings Reach Record Peaks Even as Workers Increasingly Tap 401(k) Funds

Finance · Financial Conglomerates · cnbc · 2026-09-03

Fidelity data shows 401(k) and IRA balances hitting all-time highs, yet rising hardship withdrawals signal growing financial strain among American households.

What Happened

Record Retirement Balances: Retirement savings accounts managed by Fidelity reached historic highs in the second quarter, with average 401(k) balances climbing 13.1% to $155,800. Individual Retirement Account (IRA) balances also saw significant growth, rising 10% year-over-year to reach a record average of $144,523.

Market and Savings Drivers: These gains were largely fueled by robust performance in major stock indices, including the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, which have both seen double-digit growth year-to-date. Consistent savings behavior also played a role, as the average total contribution rate remained steady at 14.4%, nearly meeting the recommended 15% benchmark.

Rising Financial Distress: Despite the positive account growth, there is evidence of increased financial pressure as more workers resort to tapping their retirement funds. The percentage of participants taking hardship withdrawals rose to 3%, while the share of workers with outstanding 401(k) loans ticked upward to 19.5%.

Long-term Savings Risks: Financial experts warn that utilizing retirement accounts for immediate expenses, often driven by inflation and the rising cost of living, threatens the long-term power of compound interest. This "leakage" from retirement plans is viewed as a concerning trend that could jeopardize future financial security if the habit of tapping these accounts persists.
