ECB Hikes Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Middle East Inflation Risks
Finance · Major Banks · yonhap_finance · 2026-09-10
The European Central Bank raised its policy rates by 25 basis points to combat persistent inflation fueled by surging energy costs from the Middle East conflict.
What Happened
Rate Hike Decision: The European Central Bank (ECB) announced a 0.25 percentage point increase across its three key policy rates on the 10th. This move brings the deposit rate to 2.50%, marking its highest level since April of last year.
Inflationary Pressures: The ECB cited the ongoing Middle East conflict as a primary driver of energy price volatility and persistent inflationary pressure. Eurozone consumer price inflation has reached 3.3%, remaining well above the central bank's 2% target for six consecutive months.
Economic Outlook: While the ECB slightly upgraded its 2023 growth forecast for the Eurozone to 0.9%, it also raised its inflation projection for next year to 2.5%. Officials noted that the economic outlook remains highly uncertain, with significant upside risks to inflation and downside risks to growth.
Future Policy Path: Financial markets anticipate further rate hikes by the end of the year and into next year. However, analysts suggest that rising debt burdens and elevated long-term bond yields may constrain the ECB's ability to maintain an aggressively hawkish stance.
