Electronic Technology · Semiconductors · economic_daily · 2026-09-01
Taiwan stocks rallied over 400 points to break the 46,600 mark, led by MediaTek's limit-up surge following a major investment deal with NVIDIA and Alphabet.
What Happened
Taiwan Market Rally: The Taiwan stock market opened higher and extended gains, climbing over 400 points to surpass the 46,600 level. Despite mixed performance in major U.S. indices, the positive momentum from the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index and stable overnight index futures provided a solid foundation for the local market.
TSMC Stability: TSMC shares showed resilience, recovering from an early dip to trade higher at 2,420 TWD. With a market capitalization reaching 62.75 trillion TWD, the company contributed approximately 119 points to the broader index, underscoring its role as a key market anchor.
MediaTek Strategic Boost: MediaTek announced a deepened partnership with NVIDIA to develop AI infrastructure and automotive solutions, supported by a 3.5 billion USD investment in its overseas convertible bonds (ECB) from NVIDIA and Alphabet. This news triggered a limit-up move for MediaTek, with shares jumping to 4,315 TWD.
Sector Performance: The electronic sector led the market rally, posting a gain of approximately 0.77%. Strong buying interest in semiconductor heavyweights drove the overall index, reflecting robust investor confidence and a clear concentration of capital in high-tech leaders.
