FLUT, CME

Flutter Entertainment shares dropped 13% after the company missed earnings estimates, cut its U.S. profit guidance by 22%, and announced a leadership transition.

What Happened

Earnings Miss and Guidance Cut: Flutter Entertainment reported second-quarter earnings per share of 49 cents, missing the 60-cent expectation set by Wall Street analysts. The company also lowered its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance for its U.S. operations by 22%, now projecting $760 million as it prioritizes long-term market share over immediate profitability.

Leadership Transition: CEO Peter Jackson is stepping down at the end of the quarter after a nine-year tenure that included the pivotal acquisition of FanDuel. Dan Taylor, currently the head of Flutter's international division, will assume the CEO role effective October 1 to oversee the company's strategic pivot.

Strategic Reinvestment Plan: To combat recent market share losses, Flutter is committing an additional $270 million in EBITDA investment toward customer promotions, loyalty programs, and enhanced betting protections. Management aims to improve competitive positioning by increasing promotional spending to roughly 6% of handle, focusing on growth ahead of the upcoming football season.

Operational and Market Shifts: The company is transitioning its prediction market contracts from CME to Crypto.com to enable faster product launches and broader catalog availability. Despite the current headwinds, leadership expressed confidence that these investments will drive stronger customer engagement and durable growth heading into 2027.
