The KOSPI index fell sharply as global semiconductor headwinds and domestic disappointment in chip giants triggered a broad market sell-off.
What Happened
Market Downturn: The KOSPI index is experiencing a significant drop, driven by weakness in global semiconductor stocks and a continued decline in domestic chip giants. Concerns over AI data center regulations and new IPO filings by Chinese memory manufacturers have soured investor sentiment.
Foreign Selling Pressure: Foreign investors have continued their net selling streak for the third consecutive session, acting as the primary driver of the market decline. While retail and domestic institutional investors are attempting to absorb the selling pressure, the volume remains overwhelming.
Sector-Wide Decline: Large-cap semiconductor stocks, including Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics, are leading the decline. The KOSPI is not alone, as the KOSDAQ has also fallen below the 800-point threshold, with major constituents like EcoPro and Alteogen seeing significant losses.
Macro Outlook: Despite the equity market slump, macro indicators such as U.S. Treasury yields and oil prices have shown signs of stabilization. However, the market remains cautious ahead of Nvidia's earnings release, with lingering concerns over the semiconductor industry's near-term outlook.
