Taiwan Brokerage Profits Drop 58% in July Amid Market Correction

Finance · Investment Banks/Brokers · economic_daily · 2026-08-26

Taiwanese brokerage firms saw a 58.75% monthly decline in net profit for July as market volatility and lower trading volumes impacted brokerage and trading income.

What Happened

Monthly Profit Decline: Taiwan's brokerage industry reported a net profit of NT$10.96 billion in July, marking a significant 58.75% drop from June. The decline was largely driven by a 21.12% reduction in total market trading value, which directly impacted brokerage commission income.

Trading and Underwriting Losses: Both proprietary trading and underwriting businesses shifted from profit to loss in July, recording losses of NT$2.80 billion and NT$1.46 billion, respectively. This reversal contrasts sharply with the profitable performance observed across these segments in the previous month.

Strong Year-to-Date Performance: Despite the July downturn, the cumulative net profit for all brokerage firms in the first seven months of the year reached NT$155.05 billion. This represents a robust 231.22% increase compared to the same period last year.

Growth Drivers: The Taiwan Stock Exchange noted that year-to-date gains were supported by a 1.63-fold increase in brokerage commission income and significant growth in proprietary and underwriting profits. These figures underscore the industry's strong overall performance throughout the first half of 2024.
