PharmaEssentia's long-acting interferon Ropeg has been approved in China to treat essential thrombocythemia, targeting a market of 400,000 patients.
What Happened
Regulatory Approval: PharmaEssentia announced that its long-acting interferon, Ropeg (P1101), has received approval from China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). The drug is indicated for adult patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET) who have had an inadequate response to hydroxyurea.
Market Strategy: As the only interferon therapy approved for ET in China, Ropeg has also been recommended as a first-line treatment in the latest Chinese Medical Association guidelines. The company plans to focus on the self-pay market in major hospitals while working toward inclusion in the national health insurance system.
Patient Population: Essential thrombocythemia is a type of myeloproliferative neoplasm that poses significant risks of thrombosis and hemorrhage, with potential progression to more severe conditions. Estimates suggest there are approximately 400,000 ET patients in China, currently relying on limited existing treatment options.
Global Expansion: This approval marks a significant milestone for PharmaEssentia's global strategy in the MPN field. Having already secured approvals for polycythemia vera (PV) in approximately 50 countries, the company expects this expansion into the Chinese market to serve as a key driver for future growth.
