A long-standing model RRIF portfolio has surpassed its growth-focused counterpart, delivering significant capital appreciation and consistent dividend income.
What Happened
Portfolio Performance Overview: The model RRIF portfolio, established in 2013, has recently outperformed the author's high-growth portfolio by focusing on low-risk blue-chip assets. Over the last five months, the portfolio achieved an 11.6% gain, significantly exceeding the benchmark returns of a five-year GIC.
Asset Allocation Strategy: The strategy prioritizes capital preservation and income generation using a mix of high-interest ETFs, preferred shares, and dividend-paying equities. Key holdings include Royal Bank of Canada (RY), Power Corporation of Canada (POW), and Manulife Financial (MFC), all of which contributed positively to the recent valuation increase.
Income and Growth Results: While the portfolio is currently tracking slightly behind its 5% annual cash flow target, strong capital gains have more than compensated for the shortfall. Since its inception 13.5 years ago, the portfolio has delivered a cumulative total return of over 1,086%, reflecting a solid compound annual growth rate.
Rebalancing and Future Outlook: Given the strong performance across all current holdings, no major divestments were made during the latest review. The manager opted to reinvest cash reserves into existing positions, including XBAL, FC, and XUT, to maintain the portfolio's balanced structure heading into the next review period.
