Taiwan Stocks Stage Dramatic Rebound Led by TSMC

Taiwanese stocks saw a massive intraday reversal, surging over 400 points to close at the daily high as TSMC led a late-session rally despite heavy selling pressure.

What Happened

Intraday Market Volatility: The Taiwan stock market experienced significant turbulence yesterday, initially plunging over 500 points due to weakness in U.S. tech stocks and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. However, a late-session surge in buying interest for heavyweight electronics and financial stocks allowed the index to erase its losses and close at the daily high, with a total intraday swing of 959 points.

TSMC Leads the Rally: TSMC acted as the primary catalyst for the market's recovery, with a massive buy order of 2,997 shares in the final minutes pushing the stock to a daily high of NT$2,400. TSMC alone contributed 200 points to the index's gain, serving as the core driver for the market's dramatic turnaround.

Market Buying Forces: Analysts attribute the rebound to a combination of policy-driven funds, including state-backed banks, alongside domestic institutional investors and short-covering activity. Despite a net sell-off of NT$4.71 billion by the three major institutional investor groups, robust domestic buying successfully offset the selling pressure from foreign investors.

Foreign Investor Positioning: Foreign investors continued to trim their holdings, recording a net sell-off of NT$780 million in the spot market, marking two consecutive days of net selling. With foreign net short positions in the futures market remaining elevated at 85,000 contracts, market participants remain cautious regarding the outlook for foreign capital flows.
