Taiwanese petrochemical companies are repurposing idle land and power facilities into AI data centers to meet surging demand for computing power and infrastructure.
What Happened
Asset Repurposing Strategy: As AI data centers face a critical shortage of land and power, Taiwanese petrochemical companies are transforming their idle industrial assets into high-value AI infrastructure. This strategic pivot allows these firms to optimize their asset portfolios while tapping into the booming AI sector.
CPDC's AI Initiative: China Petrochemical Development Corp (CPDC) has decommissioned its Toufen CPL plant to make way for an AI data center project. The company is in final negotiations with partners like XiTTR, leveraging the site's existing power generation and infrastructure to support a multi-phase 155MW computing facility.
Formosa Chemicals' Expansion: Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp (FCFC) is also actively marketing its land and power resources to AI operators. By integrating its captive power plants and utility infrastructure, the company aims to provide a stable, ready-to-use environment for large-scale AI computing operations.
Industry-Wide Transformation: Beyond CPDC and FCFC, companies like China Man-Made Fiber are exploring similar paths to monetize their land and utility advantages. This trend reflects a broader effort within the traditional petrochemical industry to diversify revenue streams by supporting the digital economy's infrastructure needs.
