Foreign institutional investors have sold a record NT$2.55 trillion in Taiwan stocks this year, while local funds and state-backed banks aggressively buy the dip.
What Happened
Capital Tug-of-War: Taiwan's stock market is witnessing a historic clash between foreign and domestic capital, with foreign investors offloading a record NT$2.55 trillion year-to-date. In contrast, local investment trusts and state-backed banks have stepped in as primary stabilizers, recording historic annual net buying figures of NT$1.02 trillion and NT$531.06 billion, respectively.
Market Outlook: Analysts suggest that while persistent foreign selling has pressured the market and weakened the TWD, the downside potential is becoming limited. Market experts believe that once foreign selling pressure eases or reverses, the market could experience a sharp and rapid short-covering rally.
Foreign Selling Focus: Data from CMoney indicates that foreign selling has been heavily concentrated in the AI supply chain. TSMC has been the primary target with NT$2.1 trillion in net sales, reducing foreign ownership to a multi-year low of 68.4%, while Delta Electronics, MediaTek, and Yageo have also faced significant liquidation.
Domestic Buying Strategy: Local investment trusts have focused their buying exclusively on technology stocks, with TSMC leading the pack at NT$324.59 billion, pushing their stake to a record 3.9%. Other major beneficiaries of domestic support include Quanta Computer and Nanya, which have received substantial inflows from local institutional investors.
