Taiwan stocks fell below the 45,000-point mark on the first trading day of November as foreign investors sold off NT$73.5 billion, though they continued to accumulate select tech and transport stocks.
What Happened
Market Decline Below Key Level: The Taiwan stock market faced significant pressure on the first trading day of November, closing down 291.69 points at 44,920.14. The index struggled to maintain the 45,000-point threshold, experiencing a volatile session with a daily range of over 750 points before succumbing to late-session selling.
Heavy Foreign Selling: Institutional investors were net sellers, with foreign and mainland capital outflows totaling NT$73.52 billion, marking three consecutive days of net selling. While domestic investment trusts provided support with a net buy of NT$36.12 billion, the overall market sentiment remained weighed down by the aggressive foreign divestment.
ETF and Tech Sell-off: Foreign investors targeted ETFs heavily, with six different types—including active, market-cap-weighted, and high-dividend funds—appearing in the top ten net-sell list. Major semiconductor players like TSMC and PSMC, along with select financial stocks, also faced significant selling pressure from foreign institutional participants.
Selective Buying Strategy: Despite the broad sell-off, foreign investors continued to accumulate specific stocks in the electronics, transportation, and traditional manufacturing sectors. Innolux led the buying list with over 26,000 shares, followed by notable interest in Foxconn, AUO, China Airlines, and UMC, suggesting a tactical rotation rather than a complete exit from these sectors.
