Taiwan stocks plunged over 1,600 points as foreign investors offloaded NT$107.3 billion, with active ETFs dominating the top sell list.
What Happened
Market Sell-off: Taiwan's stock market faced intense selling pressure following a slump in U.S. tech stocks, with the index dropping 1,612.6 points to close at 43,307.54. The market has now accumulated a decline of over 3,700 points over four consecutive trading sessions.
Institutional Activity: Foreign investors led the exodus with a single-day net sell of NT$107.3 billion, while domestic institutional investors (SITEs) bucked the trend by net buying NT$199.05 billion. The overall institutional net sell reached NT$146.46 billion, highlighting a sharp divergence in market sentiment.
ETF Liquidation: Active ETFs were the primary targets of foreign selling, occupying the top three spots on the list of most sold stocks. This indicates a significant tactical shift by foreign capital away from active investment vehicles amid heightened market volatility.
Selective Buying: Despite the broad sell-off, foreign investors showed selective interest in specific sectors, with Taiwan Glass Industry leading the buy list. Other assets, including real estate-linked ETFs and select traditional industry leaders, also saw net inflows, while UMC remained the only electronics stock to attract consistent foreign buying.
