Singapore July Inflation Climbs to 22-Month Peak Despite Missing Forecasts
cnbc · 2026-08-24
Singapore's consumer prices rose 2.2% in July, reaching a near two-year high driven by energy costs, though the figure fell short of economist projections.
What Happened
Inflation Trends and Expectations: Consumer prices in Singapore climbed by 2.2% year-on-year in July, marking the highest level in nearly two years. Despite this acceleration from June's 1.9% increase, the data undershot the 2.3% growth anticipated by market analysts.
Drivers of Price Pressures: The uptick in inflation was largely attributed to rising energy costs, which pushed electricity prices higher following geopolitical tensions involving Iran. Core inflation, which excludes volatile categories like private transport and housing, reached 2%, also coming in below the 2.2% consensus forecast.
Policy and Fiscal Response: The Monetary Authority of Singapore previously implemented a surprise tightening of monetary policy in July to combat rising imported inflation. To mitigate the impact of these costs on the public, the government introduced support packages totaling 2 billion Singapore dollars, including tax rebates and household vouchers.
Economic Growth Outlook: Alongside the inflation report, Singapore significantly raised its full-year 2026 GDP growth forecast to a range of 4.5% to 5.5%. This optimistic outlook represents a substantial increase from the previous projection of 2% to 4%, signaling confidence in the city-state's broader economic resilience.
