KRX Suspends Overnight Derivatives Trading Ahead of Chuseok Holiday

Finance · Investment Banks/Brokers · yonhap_finance · 2026-09-09

The Korea Exchange will halt overnight derivatives trading on September 23 to mitigate market risks and protect investors during the upcoming Chuseok holiday.

What Happened

Suspension Announcement: The Korea Exchange (KRX) has announced that it will suspend overnight derivatives trading on September 23, the day before the Chuseok holiday begins. This measure is intended to maintain market stability and prevent potential volatility during the extended break.

Risk Management: The exchange explained that because overnight trades are settled in conjunction with the following regular session, a holiday break could leave investors exposed to market risks for an extended period. The decision aims to mitigate concerns regarding margin calls, liquidity shortages, and potential counterparty risks.

Affected Products: The suspension covers a wide range of derivatives, including KOSPI 200 and KOSDAQ 150 futures and options. Additionally, FICC derivatives such as U.S. dollar futures and 3-year and 10-year government bond futures will also be unavailable during this time.

Operational Policy: Since the launch of overnight derivatives trading in June of last year, the KRX has consistently implemented holiday-related suspensions. This proactive approach ensures that market participants are not caught off guard by long-term exposure during periods when the exchange is closed.
