Hana Bank Launches Direct Purchase Service for Retail Government Bonds via Retirement Accounts

Finance · Major Banks · yonhap_finance · 2026-09-09

Hana Bank has introduced a new service allowing retirement account holders to invest directly in retail government bonds, offering tax deferral and compound interest benefits.

What Happened

Product Launch: Hana Bank has officially launched a service enabling customers to purchase retail government bonds directly through their retirement pension accounts. This initiative allows individual investors to incorporate government-backed savings bonds into their retirement portfolios.

Investment Structure: Investors can utilize Defined Contribution (DC) and Individual Retirement Pension (IRP) accounts to purchase 10-year or 20-year maturity bonds in increments of 100,000 KRW. Holding these bonds until maturity provides compound interest based on the coupon rate plus additional premiums.

Tax Advantages: The service offers significant tax benefits, as taxation on investment interest is deferred until the withdrawal stage. This structure enhances the compound interest effect over time, and receiving the funds as a pension after age 55 allows for lower pension income tax rates.

Subscription Details: Bonds are issued on the 20th of each month, with September subscriptions currently available at bank branches. Starting in October, customers will also be able to apply for these bonds conveniently through the bank's mobile application, Hana 1Q.
