Foreign Shoppers Drive South Korean Duty-Free Sales as Domestic Demand Lags

Consumer Services · Other Consumer Services · yonhap_finance · 2026-08-26

Foreigners accounted for over 77% of South Korea's duty-free sales in July, highlighting a growing reliance on international tourists as domestic spending declines.

What Happened

Surge in Foreign Spending: According to the Korea Duty Free Shops Association, foreign shoppers accounted for 77.3% of total sales in July, marking a 7.7 percentage point increase from the previous year. The number of foreign visitors grew by 31.6% to over 1.3 million, driving total foreign revenue to 824.8 billion won.

Domestic Market Contraction: In contrast, domestic participation in duty-free shopping continued to decline, with both visitor numbers and revenue falling by double digits compared to last year. Data shows that foreign shoppers spend significantly more per person, averaging 630,000 won compared to 180,000 won for domestic customers.

Monthly Performance Shifts: While year-over-year growth remains positive, July saw a 10% month-on-month decrease in foreign revenue compared to June. Conversely, domestic revenue showed signs of a rebound, rising 14.6% from the previous month, suggesting a potential shift in consumer behavior.

Outlook for Recovery: Industry experts point to the recent decline in the won-dollar exchange rate as a potential catalyst for domestic recovery. As travel costs become more manageable, there is cautious optimism that domestic demand for duty-free goods may gradually improve in the coming months.
